Oxfam America delivers to Obama Administration 57,906 voices calling for a climate treaty that helps the poor during Climate Week NYC 2009
Oxfam America & Oxfam Action Corps volunteers meet with United States Mission to the United Nations
On the eve of the UN Climate Summit at which President Obama will address world's leaders, Oxfam America delivered to the US Mission at the UN petitions representing 57,906 calls for a strong climate treaty that provides help to poor and vulnerable communities suffering the impacts of climate change.
The actions, collected across the US by hundreds of Oxfam volunteers as well as through online actions, were delivered to the Director of Public Affairs Mara Tekach by New York-based Oxfam Action Corps volunteers Flora Smith, Winnifred Lee, Fatima Schoenfelder and Cathie Capobianco, accompanied by Oxfam America staff organizer Brian Rawson, and in coordination with policy staffperson Shawnee Hoover. The sentiment of the actions are summarized in the following statement accompanying the delivery:
"We are at a critical crossroads on climate change. This is a global problem that demands a global solution - the U.S. cannot solve the problem alone. We must make a strong commitment to cut our own carbon pollution, and provide meaningful resources to help poor and vulnerable communities around the world cope with the harmful effects of climate change."

Action Corps sends giant postcard to Senator Gillibrand -- and she responds

This summer Oxfam Action Corps NYC members signed the back of this huge postcard to Senator Gillibrand, asking her to take a stand for those who are hit first and worst by climate change. We also sent her several letters. In August and September we met with her Director of Community Affairs. She has since agreed to become a Sister on the Planet Ambassador, making her the first U.S. Senator to join this project. As a Sister on the Planet she pledges to speak up for those around the world who are most vulnerable to climate change. Thank you, Senator Gillibrand!
